New Westminster is getting ready for one of its biggest community celebrations of the year as the Hyack Multicultural Parade and Festival returns this weekend. The free family-friendly event will bring colourful parade floats, live entertainment, food trucks, cultural performances, and activities to the city on Saturday, May 23. Drivers should prepare for multiple road closures throughout Uptown New West and around the parade route. Thousands are expected to attend the annual celebration at Tipperary Park and Queens Park.

Hyack Multicultural Parade & Festival Brings Major Celebration to New Westminster

One of New Westminster’s most anticipated annual events is making its return this weekend as the 54th annual Hyack Multicultural Parade and Festival takes over the city on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

Hosted by the Hyack Festival Association, the long-running celebration is recognized as one of British Columbia’s largest family-oriented parades, drawing thousands of attendees from across Metro Vancouver every year. The free event celebrates multiculturalism, community spirit, and local entertainment with a full day of festivities planned throughout New Westminster.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 6th Street before travelling south along 6th Street. From there, the route continues along Queens Avenue past Tipperary Park before heading north toward Queens Park.

Residents and commuters should expect significant traffic disruptions and road closures throughout the Uptown neighbourhood during the event. Several streets surrounding the parade route are expected to close early Saturday morning to allow for parade staging and participant setup. Areas impacted may include sections of 8th Avenue, 6th Street, Queens Avenue, and surrounding residential roads.

Drivers are also being advised to pay attention to temporary no-parking signs and barricades along the route, as parking restrictions will be enforced throughout the day.

For those attending the festivities, organizers recommend parking at locations such as Royal City Centre, Westminster Centre, and the Belmont Parkade. Limited free street parking will also be available, although non-residential parking limits will still apply in many areas.

Attendees are encouraged to take public transit whenever possible due to the large crowds expected throughout the day.

Following the parade, the celebration will continue with the Festival in the Park at Tipperary Park from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy live music performances, cultural entertainment, artisan vendors, local exhibitors, and a variety of food trucks offering snacks and meals for all ages.

The annual event continues to be one of New Westminster’s signature community celebrations, bringing together residents and visitors for a day focused on diversity, culture, and family-friendly fun.
