Canada's memorable World Cup victory over Qatar was filled with celebration, but it also included a heartfelt moment that united players and fans alike. After midfielder Ismaël Koné was forced to leave the match due to an injury, teammate Nathan Saliba stepped up in a big way. The Canadian midfielder scored shortly after entering the game and dedicated the goal to his injured teammate. It became one of the most emotional moments of Canada's historic night at BC Place.
Canada’s dominant victory over Qatar at the FIFA World Cup will be remembered for the goals, the atmosphere, and the historic result. However, one of the night’s most memorable moments came during the second half when Canadian players rallied around an injured teammate.
After building a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening half thanks to goals from Cyle Larin and a first-half brace from Jonathan David, Canada appeared firmly in control at BC Place.
Early in the second half, midfielder Ismaël Koné was forced to leave the match following a collision on the field. Medical staff attended to Koné before he was taken off the pitch, drawing applause and support from the crowd of more than 52,000 spectators.
The moment temporarily shifted the mood inside the stadium, as players, coaches, and supporters showed concern for the Canadian midfielder.
Shortly afterward, Nathan Saliba entered the match as Koné’s replacement and quickly made an impact. The midfielder scored Canada’s fourth goal of the evening, helping extend the lead and continue the team’s dominant performance.
Following the goal, Saliba delivered a touching tribute by holding up Koné’s jersey toward the crowd. The gesture was met with loud applause from supporters and became one of the defining images of Canada’s historic victory.
The emotional moment showcased the strong bond within the Canadian squad and highlighted the team’s resilience during a night that featured both celebration and adversity.
Canada would go on to complete a 6-0 victory over Qatar National Football Team, securing the nation’s first-ever men’s FIFA World Cup win and moving to the top of Group B.
While the result itself was historic, Saliba’s tribute served as a reminder of the unity and character that have helped shape Canada’s rise on the international soccer stage.
