$14,000 Pokemon Card Robbery in Vancouver Ends With 3 Teen Arrests

A Pokémon card deal in Vancouver turned violent after a seller was bear-sprayed during a meetup. Police say the cards were worth around $14,000, and three teens have now been arrested. This is just the latest in a growing trend of Pokémon card-related crime across Metro Vancouver. Here’s what happened.

There’s been a noticeable rise in crime connected to Pokemon cards across Metro Vancouver recently, and another incident has now resulted in three teenagers being arrested.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, the situation involved a robbery tied to high-value Pokémon cards. The incident happened Tuesday night just after 8 p.m. near East King Edward Avenue and Ontario Street, where officers responded to an active robbery call. Police say a man was bear-sprayed after attempting to sell two Pokémon cards, each reportedly worth around $7,000.

After the attack, the suspects took off in a vehicle with the cards, but were later stopped by police in Burnaby near Macpherson Avenue and Beresford Street. Officers arrested the suspects at the scene, and they were later released with conditions.

Police were only able to recover one of the stolen Pokémon cards, which has since been returned to the victim. Authorities are now recommending criminal charges against three suspects — two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old.

In a statement, VPD Constable Darren Wong reminded the public to stay cautious when meeting strangers for transactions. He advised using the department’s Safe Exchange Zone, located outside their headquarters at 2120 Cambie Street, as a safer place to buy, sell, or trade items.

This incident comes shortly after a similar case earlier in the month, where someone also used bear spray during Pokemon card-related meetups. Police confirmed that an arrest was made in connection to those incidents as well.
